Ok, done like musicbrainz.org
http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardTagMapping
TPE2 "Band/orchestra/accompaniment" is considered
the "album artist".
If it's not available, then use TPE1 "Lead
performer(s)/Soloist(s)".
Now to get the complaints of people with tags in the other order
(we already have some here at the office!) ;-) |

I checked all my files...
Both fields (TPE1 and TPE2) are used. I didn't mention this in
the last post, because I thought that at least TPE1 has to be
present.
TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Soloist(s)): XXXX
TPE2 (Band/orchestra/accompaniment): YYYY
Normal CD (only one artist):
XXXX = Artist
YYYY = same as XXXX
Mix CD (different artists):
XXXX = Artist of the current Track
YYYY = Album Artist (e.g. "Various Artists")
This is at least the way "http://musicbrainz.org/"
chosed. |

Ouch, so they just provide TPE2? If this is the case then I must
add TPE2 as well, but the problem remain: in which order? Does
the order matters?
Could you check among all your files whenever you have both set
and in this case which one would be the "good" to use? |

Thanks Gustavo for this update!
I sync my mp3's with "MusicBrainz" database and noticed
that TPE1 isnt't used for the "Album Artist". Instead
TPE2 is used for that kind of information.
Are you sure that TPE1 is the right place to check for "Album
Artist"? Or perhaps both fields (TPE1 and TPE2) should be
checked!? |

Guys,
I fixed a problem that might solve this too, but I need your
input: please check with an id3 tag viewer tool whenever these
files have the field "Lead Artist" (code: TPE1).
If you use GNU/Linux you can use id3v2 (http://id3v2.sourceforge.net)
command line:
id3v2 -l $FILE
and it will print the line:
TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Soloist(s)): XXXXXXXXXXXXX
If all your files have the same TPE1, then it should work fine
now (next release). Otherwise let me know. |

i have the same issue, i am populating the album tag but since
all the artists on each track are different this bug causes 10-20
albums to appear each with one track making canola useless for
playing my locaal media! can you not just use the album tag?
or assume that all files in the same folder belong to the same
album? |

It should use the newish tag of "Album artist" that
WMP and I believe now iTunes uses for sorting albums. |

When you say that most programs do not fill the id3 tag data
in a uniform way. I use musicbrainz classic tagger
http://musicbrainz.org/ as the user community do ensure that
the id3 tagging is consistent for all album artist id3 tags on
their servers.
So is it not the case that we will need to advise the users on
how to store their tagging information to get the best use of
Canola moving forward. I think the problem described is a problem
for itunes and ipods too when using mp3 files already tagged
from other sources.
hope information is useful |

Thanks for replying so fast!
It's ok, if it take some time to fix this. It's no critical bug
(perhaps a bit annoying). As "workaround" I will change
my id3 tags. |

Sorry, but today the database is 1-artist per album, which is
the common case.
Having multiple artists per album (ie: collection, 80's best
songs, ...) is more complicated, not only from db side, but to
get correct data from id3 tags: most programs don't fill this
in an uniform way :-/
So I'll accept the bug, but it might take some time to actually
fix it, ok? |
