-- Yes, it looks like 2.6.24 may be too old -- the supported systems all use 2.6.26 or newer, I believe. I'm not exactly sure, though... and maemo.org doesn't seem to mention the minimum kernel version either. Good to know that the kernel update fixed the freezing problem, though.

-- Do you mean nothing happens on startup, and ESbox still fails to run any commands? If so, what do you get when you run "/scratchbox/tools/bin/sb-conf current" by hand?
If ESbox can't talk to scratchbox, then yes, you'll have to do everything manually... which makes ESbox pretty useless. :( Please tell me if you can do normal scratchbox commands from the console, outside ESbox, first. ESbox is just invoking commands the same way.

-- Ok, this is in one of the third-party editors we bundle. I assume a Makefile.am editor is open at the time when you close the project? Is it in the front or behind other editors? Does it happen all the time? (I tried doing something similar, closing a project for which the MAkefile.am is open with error markers, and didn't get this exception.)

Yes, there's a tracker on the project page:
https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?atid=1420&group_id=192&func=browse
You can also send emails to the esbox-users at garage.maemo.org mailing list (cc'ed here) to discuss things with us until we are sure there's an error ;)
